Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
