TikTok Offers Users Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Videos in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that permits them to lessen the amount of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts more than 1 bn content made with AI.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is being tested over the following weeks before a widespread launch. This shift coincides with a surge in AI content, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that nearly 10% of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this material is considered mass-produced AI material, a phrase for inferior, bulk-generated content that is typically illogical or surreal.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to see more or less of that, depending on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 million videos are uploaded to the service each day, making AI-generated material a limited percentage of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they watch by opening the content preference option in the platform and selecting “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the setting cover current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies oblige content makers to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it bans malicious deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will now attach an artificially created tag to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This action is aimed to deter users from trying to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is additionally launching a $2 million awareness program for experts and organizations to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This program will benefit non-profit groups focused on teaching programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has supported its moderation strategy, amid debate over proposals to cut jobs for numerous safety staff in Britain. TikTok is expected to cut a significant number of roles in its trust and safety department in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A company official clarified that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by filtering out the most graphic content before it gets reviewed by staff. The platform reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the past year due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
